WHAT IS UroCuff Testing?

UroCuff is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that we offer to evaluate the efficiency of the bladder. This includes assessing bladder function, pressure, and urine flow. It is an in-office procedure that can be done quickly and is often used in men who experience lower urinary tract symptoms.

Symptoms that may prompt your doctor to recommend UroCuff testing are:

  • Urinary urgency and/or frequency
  • Frequent trips to the restroom during the night (nocturia)
  • Urinary flow problems such as a poor urine stream
  • Incomplete emptying, dribbling, hesitancy
  • Urination that starts and stops
  • Dysuria (painful urination)
  • Overflow incontinence (involuntary release of urine from an overly full bladder)

HOW IS IT DONE?

UroCuff testing requires very little preparation. On the day of your appointment, you will be asked to arrive at our office with a comfortably full bladder. Patients should not urinate before seeing their doctor for testing.

After changing into a procedure robe, a small cuff resembling a blood pressure cuff will be wrapped around the penis. Patients will be instructed to urinate into a UroCuff flow meter.

The UroCuff will inflate until it disrupts urine flow and sequentially deflate to allow urination. This cycle will continue until the patient is finished urinating. When the testing is complete, the cuff will be removed.

The test usually takes between 5 to 10 minutes.

RESULTS

While the test is taking place, the UroCuff software will analyze and report bladder function based on the flow rate of your urine and cuff pressure. With the information from UroCuff testing, your doctor can make a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Over time, UroCuff testing may be repeated to help assess how effective the treatment plan is.

RISKS & COMPLICATIONS

UroCuff testing is a safe and non-invasive procedure for evaluating bladder function in children and adults. However, like any medical procedure, some potential side effects may occur. It is important to note that these risks are generally very low, and the benefits of UroCuff testing typically outweigh any potential risks.

  • Discomfort or pain during the procedure, particularly if the cuff is inflated too tightly
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI) following the procedure (rare)
  • Allergic reaction to the materials used in the UroCuff
  • False-positive or false-negative test results
