The procedure

TURBT (Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor) is a highly effective, incision-free procedure used to remove tumors from the bladder and help diagnose bladder cancer. It is typically the first step in both identifying the grade and stage of the cancer and providing treatment.

This procedure allows your urologist to remove tumors using a scope inserted through the urethra — eliminating the need for open surgery. Most patients experience minimal discomfort during recovery, and many return to normal activities within a short period.

TURBT is used to:

  • Remove bladder tumors for biopsy or treatment
  • Identify tumor stage and grade
  • Prevent tumor progression
  • Minimize surgical recovery time

HOW DOES TURBT WORK?

TURBT works by removing cancerous tissue inside the bladder using a thin scope (cystoscope) equipped with a camera and cutting device.

Your surgeon will access the bladder through the urethra — no external incisions are needed.

Once the tumor is located, it is carefully removed and sent to a pathology lab for analysis. This helps determine whether further treatment is needed.

In some cases, a dye is introduced before surgery to better illuminate the tumor. The resected area is then cauterized to prevent bleeding, and a catheter may be used temporarily to assist healing.

PROCEDURE INFO

Patients receive TURBT at our accredited clinic in Montreal. After administering anesthesia, your urologist inserts a thin scope through the urethra to reach the bladder. The tumor is identified, resected, and sent to the lab for diagnosis.

If necessary, chemotherapy may be applied directly to the bladder immediately following tumor removal. A catheter may be inserted to promote healing.

The entire visit typically lasts 1–2 hours, although the tumor resection itself only takes a short time.

Patients often resume light activities within a few days. Full recovery may take up to 6 weeks, depending on the size and number of tumors removed.

Patients may experience:

  • Mild pain or burning when urinating
  • A small amount of blood in the urine
  • Fatigue and the need for rest
  • Temporary catheter use
  • Increased urinary frequency

These symptoms generally improve within 1–2 weeks. Always contact your provider if you experience severe pain, fever, or blood clots.

Pathology results from the tumor tissue typically arrive within a few days to a week. These results will guide your treatment plan. In many cases, a second-look TURBT is scheduled 4–6 weeks later to ensure complete tumor removal and prevent recurrence.

    What is TURBT used for?
